The New PRINCE2:2009 version is due for release in June/July this year (2009), has had a number of significant changes made after considerable public consultation. It will be around two-thirds of the size of the current 2005 Manual.
There are now 7 Processes - Planning is no longer a separate Process.
The Process Model is different too, it includes triggers, new headings, symbols and layout, and the diagrams are radically different. There are also subtle changes in Process sequence:
The main change areas are increase links and terminology to other methods and bodies of knowledge such as APM, PMI, Agile, and DSDM, reduce the Manual size, increase the information on scaling and tailoring the method, make the information easier to assimilate, and to reference the soft skills of project management.
There will be two Manuals - one covering aspects of managing the project and the other focused on directing a project:
Directing Successful Projects with PRINCE2
Managing Successful Projects Using PRINCE2
The former will be used for Practitioner study, and the latter for those who may need to be involved at Project Board-level. It will now have 7 principles, business justification, roles and responsibilities, manage by exception, lessons learned, stages, product based planning, and tailoring.
The "components" sections are now called Themes, and there are 7 of them, namely, Business Case, Organisation, Quality, Plans, Risk, Change, and Progress. Quality is aligned more with ISO9000, Risk with MoR, change control is coupled with Configuration management.
The Appendices are also alterered, Appendix A is split into Baseline, Records and Reports, Appendix B is now Governance, Appendix C is Roles and Responsibilities, Appendix D is product-based Planning examples, and Appendix E is Checklists.
Here are the main changes in emphasis:
Business Justification - a Prince2 project has continuing business justification
Learn from experience - The project team learn from active use of lessons learned, recorded, and action taken.
Roles and Responsibilities - agreed roles and responsibilities
Manage by stages - The project is planned, monitored and controlled via sequential stages
Manage by Exception - The project uses Tolerances and the principle of delegated authority
Product Focus - Prince2 focusses on product definition, delivery, and quality
Tailoring - A Prince2 project is tailored against it's environment, complexity, importance and risk
